Sangiovese

Pioneered in Australia by Coriole

Tasting Brief: Sangiovese

The Sangiovese variety was pioneered in Australia by Coriole Vineyards.

It was first planted in 1985 with the aim of being a contrasting style to Shiraz, the great tradition of McLaren Vale. It has proved to be ideally sited to the warm maritime climate of the region.

Aromas of dark fruit with spice and plum. Pleasing varietal texture with palate weight and dark cherry flavours and chalky fine tannins so typical of this grape. The 2004 is the 18th vintage of Sangiovese from Coriole.

18th Vintage of Sangiovese - The Pioneering Continues

The 2004 Sangiovese represented the most mature expression of this variety so far achieved at Coriole. With vines now ranging in age between 10 and 20 years, and with several different clones from which to select, the winemaking team produced a true varietal definition of this famous Tuscan grape. The wine is not about “big” body and weight, but rather fruit and flavour, with a savoury, almost spicy complexity. Each vintage teaches us something new, and with the most mature Sangiovese vines in the country, the future for this variety at Coriole looks very bright indeed.
