What better way to enjoy good wine than with a poem at the table?
What better way to enjoy poetry than with a glass of good wine in your hand?
This year Coriole launched a poetry prize to find the "National Wine Poet". Entries closed on 30 May. The winning poet receives a cash prize of $4,000 and their poems are featured on a bottling of Cabernet Barbera named after the poet.
Well known Australian poets Chris Wallace-Crabbe and Jude Aquilina are the judges of the many hundreds of entries from poets around Australia. The wines will be presented as a six pack with each of the bottles containing one of the six poems on the back label.
The 2006 Cabernet Barbera will be released later in the year along with the announcement of the winning poet.
Competition details
- The Coriole Poetry Competition will select The Australian Wine Poet for 2012.
- The Prize money is $4,000 plus wine to the value of $1,000.
- The name of the winning poet is used for a red wine made at Coriole. Six poems are selected for the back labels. The wine is packaged in boxes of 6 so that all poems are included in a set. This wine is then sold throughout Australia.
- Each box comes with a brochure with details of the poet, the project and the wine.
- The poet may also negotiate to include a slim book of poetry in each box.
- The wine is a blend of Cabernet and Barbera. It is a high quality wine that sells for approx $35 a bottle. Previous "Coriole poet series" have featured poets Jude Aquilina and Peter Goldsworthy. These series were a great success and hence it was decided to extend the selection to a national competition.
- The five runner-up entries will receive a six pack of the winning wine.
