2008 Nebbiolo - top drops

Mark Lloyd's Italian varieties offer a flavour world far removed our usual menu of shiraz, cabernet and pinot noir. The limpid sangiovese appeals for its medium body, savoury flavours and taut, grippy tannins such a good combination with char-grilled meat of all kinds. The barbera startles with its vivid crimson colour and high-toned aroma - always reminiscent of summer berries, but in this warm vintage resembling very ripe mulberries. The palate is soft and round, but not without a tannic twist to finish. The deceptively pale nebbiolo offers deep, earthy flavours, tightly bound with firm, lingering, drying tannins.

"Coriole was one of the pioneers of Italian varieties in Australia, and has been producing sangiovese from its McLaren Vale vineyards for more than 20 years. This nebbiolo a recent addition to the range was sourced from the cooler Adelaide Hills, and reflects its provenance well: dusty, herbal aromas lead on to a mouthful of lean and savoury tannins.

The salty, floral intensity of the cheese tackles those tannins head on and releases a new spectrum of sweet red fruit in the wine. A great match."

"Nebbiolo can be a difficult variety for the consumer to get their head around. Firstly the colour has little relation to the strength and power of the wine, many being quite light but amazingly intense, and secondly the high levels of acid and tannin can be a little intimidating for the uninitiated. All that and however, once you try a good one you'll never look back. And this one from Coriole is a good one indeed. Medium bodied, dry, savory and very complex with hints of old leather, mint, orange peel, and some sweet red berries. It's balanced and very rewarding to drink, particularly with food. "Smells tangy and vanilla-like, with box hedge and loganberry pips; really intriguing this. On the palate there's blackberry pips and fruit vanilla aplenty, with a fine layer of brick dust. And a bone dry, long, grippy tannined finish. Not for sweet tooths, this. Deceptively oomphy red."
