About 400 metres above sea level, rainfall is typically double our levels at Coriole and it's much cooler — an extremely different climate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThis fruit had a very high natural acidity, so to build texture and richness through the palate, the juice was pressed straight into barrels and fermented on full solids. The art label has been replaced by the former simple, black-and-white one. The limestone yields a vigour to this, a mineral acid line, yet it is a powerful, fruitful expression. Dark plum, brined Kalamata olives, black cherry, ground anise, clove, the palate silky, saline, supple, the tannins ultrafine. A soloist indeed, an individual expression that drills down on the soil and geology variations of the estate vineyard, and a very fine virtuoso wine it is. Such a charmingly fragrant and respectfully exotic wine, with a mineral undercurrent of wet stones and flint. It’s textural, acidity is vivid, there’s pithiness, and the flavour has nagging length. An initial waft of mint settles with air, revealing layers of spice and florals. Sour cherry and cranberry are paired with potpourri, fennel seed, cracked pepper, baharat-like spice notes, leather and dried oregano. This leans more mid-weight, but it shimmers with flavour depth and perfumed detail on the palate, the fruit effortlessly woven into a web of tannin that’s typically rugged yet fine. It’s distinctly different to the standard Coriole Sangiovese; more bitter, more demanding, and less fruity.
