Our Fiano journey is now 20 years old.
After discovering the variety at Vinitaly in 2000, our general manager Mark Lloyd decided it would be a great fit for McLaren Vale.
Fortunately there were two vines already in Australia in a rare vine collection – had this not being the case the journey would’ve taken another 5 or 6 years to import the cuttings and the associated quarantine requirements.
We have learnt a lot about the variety over the last two decades. Firstly, it is a delight to grow - being a strong performer in both wet and dry seasons. When it comes to the end result, the variety is naturally high in acidity, possesses intense aromatics and a rich texture. Very few varieties possess all of these attributes in such balance, this is what makes Fiano so special.
We’ve been experimenting with slightly different winemaking techniques and now produce a small amount of our Rubato Fiano – this fruit is from the original vineyard, which with vine age had really proven itself to be one of our premium blocks, we work to extract a little more texture and the wine is fully fermented in seasoned oak barrels.
It has been teetering on the edge of making the grade for our reserve range for some time but in 2019 we felt we had the balance right. Rich, medium bodied with layers of flavour and texture. Honey, ginger and hazelnut burst from the palate, and the finish is long and persistent.
And our 2019 Fiano is also looking fantastic - full and rich, with refreshing acidity and beautiful aromatics of hazelnut, orange oil and pear, this wine is 20% oak fermented with the remainder in stainless steel. A truly versatile wine, fantastic with buffalo mozzarella or burrata or pairs equally as well with an Asian spiced pork belly.
