Shiraz is a great tradition in McLaren Vale, dating back to the 1850s. Lloyd Reserve Shiraz is produced from a single vineyard at Coriole that we originally thought was planted in 1919 - but recently records have been discovered that show that this vineyard may have been planted somewhere between 1860 and 1875. The vineyard's soil and roots are extremely deep and generally no irrigation is required. The first Lloyd Shiraz release was in 1989. The wine is matured in French oak for approximately 18 months and then receives 18+ months in bottle before release.

“Original vines, thought to be planted in 1919, but with the discovery of a harvest report from 1875, they are now believed to be at least that old. Either way, they’re old. With 25% new French oak, as usual. Typically black-fruited, with blackberry, plum and olive, coffee, anise, Christmas spices and cured meat notes. There’s good transparency here and a lack of heft, with leathery, bitter-chocolate tones savoury in their impact. I very much like this cool-vintage expression, feeling a kinship with the Italian lean of much of the range. It’s not big and rich, and that may disappoint some, but it’s got intensity, balance and detail, and it’s very fine indeed. 96 points” - Marcus Ellis, Wine Companion
