Trophy - Best Cabernet in Show (Two Years or Younger) - McLaren Vale Wine Show
“Estate vines, 35 years old, matured in French oak, 20% new, for 18 months. McLaren Vale cabernet needs more attention. In the right spots, in the right years, and obviously in the right hands, it really sings. Here's an example. Such a keen balance of mulberry, blackcurrant and wild raspberry fruit, along with cedar and tobacco, dried sage, lilac, iodine, thyme and hedgerow scents. There’s an earthy, rocky quality, a little mid-palate flex, but the tannins are linear, the acidity vibrant. A very fine Mary Kathleen. 96 points” - Marcus Ellis, Wine Companion
"No doubting its varietal origin, this speaks to classic Cabernet with its blackcurrant, cigar box, mint and dried herb perfume, along with some mulchy autumnal notes and a little floral perfume. It’s medium-bodied, kind of nutty, blackberry and blackcurrant, a supple grain to tannin, juicy raspberry acidity, with a blue, black fruited and black olive laced finish of excellent length. It’s kind of old school, but in a very good way. The cool vintage has given this wine some fine tailoring and finesse. 94 points" - Gary Walsh, The Winefront
