The Mt Lofty region is one of 15 nationally recognised biodiversity hotspots in Australia. However, with just 10% of the original woodland habitats remaining the biodiversity of this region continues to decline and disappear because there is insufficient habitat remaining to support all the species. Half of the woodland bird species of this region will disappear unless we re-establish substantial areas of additional woodland habitat on some of the areas that we have cleared. David Paton AM will illustrate the approach that BioR, a not-for-profit, is using to re-establish large areas of functional, self-sustaining and resilient woodland habitats within the Mt Lofty region. David likens this to gardening on a grand scale and there are lots of ways people can help.
David Paton AM is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide. He is a conservation ecologist with an interest in plant-animal interactions. He is well known for his work on waterbirds and their food resources in the Coorong as well as a passion for woodland birds and their conservation. This has led to investing increasing effort in helping not-for-profit, BioR, restore woodland habitats to cleared lands to arrest ongoing declines of woodland birds in the Mt Lofty region.
