2018 Estate Grenache

2018 Estate Grenache
2018 Grenache

Our estate grenache is a barrel selection of our best barrels and in 2018 we bottled 3 barrels, resulting in a total of 99 dozen. Red cherries, pomegranate and white pepper on the nose with sage, rosemary and lavender aromatics. Strawberries and spiced rhubarb on the palate. A pretty and floral wine with great persistence and intensity.

"Quintessentially McLaren Vale, with those redcurrant jubes, molten kirsch, rose water, cranberry and pomegranate notes. Sweet-sour-crunchy. Most impressive is the broad brushstroke of tannin, partly due to an intelligent extraction regime and the choice of puncheons within which this delicious wine sat for 18 months. Drink on the cooler side. In large draughts. 95 points"
Ned Goodwin, James Halliday's Wine Companion

"Red fruit and spice, sage and salty aromatics. Medium-bodied, saline and savoury, dusting of white pepper in flavour and tannin profile, to an extent, sour cherry, rhubarb and dried herb, with a dry and spicy finish of good length."
Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

"Medium to light red/purple colour. The aromas is shy and herbal, with some rosewater, Turkish Delight notes. The palate is leaner and bonier, with tension and firmness. Good wine: it has weight and structure and persistence. Just a tad straightforward now, but it will go onwards and upwards."
Huon Hooke, The Real Review

"This has an earthy edge with spiced forest wood and leather, leading to ripe red berries and plums. The palate is smooth and fleshy, really filling out the mouth and delivering a rich impression. Riper end of the pool."

Tasting Notes
A rich wine, with good structure and intensity of fruit. Red cherries, pomegranate and white pepper on the nose with sage, rosemary and lavender aromatics. Strawberries and spiced rhubarb on the palate. A pretty and floral wine that will be drinking beautifully in 2-3 years.
Winemaker Notes
The 2018 Grenache comes from our bush vines out the front of the winery. The soils naturally produce a savoury wine, so we do 20% whole bunch and soft extraction during fermentation to get more floral aromatics and prettiness. The 2018 is in similar vain to the 2017 but 3 months longer in oak, so 14 months in total.

Other Notes
We have three small bush vine vineyards on the Coriole Estate with majority of our Estate Grown Grenache going to the GMS blend Dancing Fig. We like to reserve the best 2-3 barrels that display quintessential McLaren Vale Grenache characters for this single bottling.
